Media...

Now what is it with these Christmas songs? I mean…..every coffee place, stores, malls, restaurants and radio channels have been playing it right after Thanksgiving. It doesn’t even bring you joy or festive mood or anything of that sort …..
Trust me - this music is absolutely slow with repetitive lyrics, same song composed by minimum 10 artists – SAD.
All these songs seem to be sung by really old people with ancient style of music OR may be songs are from decade before I was born…..Why new artist don’t make xmas songs anymore? Why do I have to listen to the same Christmas music every year? I mean a prime radio channel plays these lullabies in the evening when you are driving home from office….Common!

Many many many years ago…there used to be this my favorite Doordarshan program – Rangoli –7 am on Sundays. You could really predict songs to be telecasted looking at the calendar. For example –

“Holi ke din (sholay)” @Holi ,
“Phoolon ka taronka(Hare rama Hare krishna)” @Raksha bandhan,
“Deva re deva (some Mithun song)” @Ganeshotsav,
“Maata sherawali (Amitabh-Rekha song)" @Navaratri
“chandi ki daal par (Salmaan song)" – @Dahi handi

This is so typical!! There is this unsaid unwritten norm that TV/ radio channels have to play these kinda songs to remind people that they need to start celebrating now.Or media thinks public is so dumb that they dont even check calendars for coming holidays!

You could add our public repeatedly playing The Gayathri Mantra during Ganpati to this list too!

thats quite funny that u've written this. christmas songs are a tradition (according to few of my catholic/christian friends i have got). So old songs, which have been going around for quite some time bring them that nostalgic(?!) or some kind of feelings. And new kids are given made to here those songs as well....so in then end when they turn old...they listen to these songs as well..:)

Hahahahhahahaha... ok education time:

a. These songs are SUNG by many different artists because they are popular during the season.
They were composed only by the original artists a long time ago.

b. They are SUPPOSED to be the same songs always. They are supposed to invoke nostalgia. Same with your Rangoli songs.

c. Christmas songs are traditional, so one can't really expect new songs. I'm sure you know plenty of traditional songs too.
But still, people do come up with their own Christmas-flavoured songs. These only serve as extra songs for holiday spirit on that particular artists' CDs.

d. Indian music is mainly filmy music... so songs for festivals are mainly from Bollywood movies. That way new movies can have new songs for these festivals.
Christmas songs are only recycled or remixed, so all Christmas based movies will have the same songs too.

Even though I'm not a great fan of Christmas, I still love some of the songs, mostly when they are sung by those old people with the ancient style :)

i'll tell ya, i like alot of those old songs, but it depends upon who's playing them.

case in point: listen to teh Charlie Brown Christmas album sometime, and i DARE u to say it sucks! (lol)

my mom used to play the same Andy Williams Christmas album every year when i was a kid. you'd think hearing it now would make me puke ...but it actually brings me back to my childhood.

so i guess alot of it has to do with the emotional connection you have with them at an early age.

that said, if i came here and heard all these songs for the first time, i guess i would agree. in and of themselves, they're mundane and simplistic. but don't be too dismissive of simplicity. as my guitarist used to say, sometimes "simple is better". and incidentally, the same could be said of most of the crap that comes out today (ANY music gendre). i'm tired of crappy music in GENERAL. i would kill to hear real creativity again.

love ur blogs, Sue!
